Nothing hydrates your dry skin better than a nourishing body butter. Check out the All Natural Ingredients in this Homemade Whipped Body Butter Recipe. It’s a powerhouse combination to get your skin hydrated and feeling great!

My hands really take a beating throughout the winter months. We live in an area where winters are bitter cold and I’m not really the best at wearing gloves for quick trips outside. Between the cold weather and washing dishes, my hands can easily start to crack and look years older than they should.

This year I decided to try making a homemade body butter with mango butter. I had read about mango butter but never used it before. It ended up being the only ingredient I had to purchase for this recipe. Everything else ended up being a pantry staple I already had on hand. Yay!

What I ended up finding out is that the finished product of this DIY body butter recipe works SO MUCH better than the store-bought lotions which are generally filled with harsh chemicals and fragrances.

The best part is that with just five natural ingredients, you can control what you apply to your skin and is absorbed into your body.

WHAT MAKES THIS HOMEMADE ALL NATURAL WHIPPED BODY BUTTER RECIPE SO GREAT?

All of the natural ingredients put into this Homemade Whipped Body Butter Recipe help to moisturize and heal dry, chapped skin without leaving a lasting greasy feel.

Mango butter provides deep hydration and moisture leaving the skin smooth and supple. Also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids which can help reduce the signs of aging and promote a healthy, youthful glow.

Coconut oil is not only a great natural moisturizer for your skin, but it also has amazing anti-inflammatory properties.

Olive oil is also an excellent natural moisturizer. It contains vitamin E which helps promotes skin regeneration and healing.

Arrowroot powder or corn starch are the best way to make a less greasy body butter.

Essential oils are completely optional, but a great addition. It can be so much fun to create different scents – all while avoiding any chemical fragrances!

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  • double boiler (or glass bowl in saucepan with water – see instructions below)
  • measuring cups
  • whisk
  • medium mixing bowl (if using double boiler)
  • electric mixer
  • jar for storage

HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN DOUBLE BOILER IF YOU DON’T HAVE ONE

Creating a double boiler with a saucepan is easy and doesn’t require any special tools. Here’s what you need to do:

Find a saucepan: Pick a medium saucepan and fill it with about 1–2 inches of water. The water should not touch the bottom of the bowl you’ll be placing on top.

Select a heatproof bowl: use a glass bowl that fits pretty snug on top of the saucepan without touching the water. Make sure it sits securely.

Set it up: Place the saucepan with water on the stove and put the heatproof bowl on top. Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t come into contact with the water.

Simmer water: Turn the burner on to low heat and let the water gently simmer. Avoid boiling it.

Melt ingredients in bowl: Add your ingredients to the bowl and stir as needed. The steam from the simmering water will gently heat the bowl and melt your mango butter.

ALL NATURAL INGREDIENT MEASUREMENTS

ingredients for homemade whipped body butter laid on a cutting board
  • 1/4 c. coconut oil
  • 1/4 c. olive oil, extra virgin
  • 1/2 c. mango butter (4 oz.)
  • 1 tsp. arrowroot powder or corn starch
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oils, optional

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER

The process of making whipped body butter is so simple. You slowly heat up the oils to their melting point and then cool them back down so you can whip them into a silky smooth body butter.

So, first start by heating water in the lower part of your double boiler over low heat (or saucepan & mixing bowl).

Second, measure coconut oil, olive oil, and mango butter into double boiler. Continue to melt mango butter over low heat until completely melted.

Next, remove from heat and let cool slightly. Add in arrowroot powder and whisk to combine.

Then, pour oil mixture into mixing bowl and place bowl in freezer to allow it to set up. You will know it’s ready when you press a finger into the mixture, and it holds an indent – mine usually takes about 30 minutes to set.

Finally, add in essential oils if using. With your electric mixer, whip the ingredients together until you have a light and airy homemade body butter. Should take about 2 minutes.

The finished product of this homemade body butter is very rich and nourishing. A small amount goes a long way, so use sparingly.

You can use this creamy body butter any time of day, but it works great to put it on right before bed. That way it allows your skin to really soak up the nutrients. I like to add lavender essential oil to promote a calming effect for a restful night.

ESSENTIAL OIL SCENT IDEAS

Uplifting: 7 drops Lemon & 3 drops Ylang, Ylang

Youthful skin: 2 drops each of Frankincense, Lavender, Myrrh, & Rosemary

Relaxation: 6 drops Lavender & 4 drops Vanilla

Caution: Citrus essential oils, when used topically, can make your skin more likely to be burned by the sun. To stay safe, it’s a good idea to: Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 12-24 hours after applying citrus oils or dilute them properly in a carrier oil before use.

Not all essential oils are kid safe, so always do your research and check before applying on children.

STORAGE

Store homemade body butter in an airtight container. Keep it in a cool place, out of direct sunlight. If stored properly, shelf life is up to 6 months.

*Note – coconut oil does reach its melting point at about 76 degrees Fahrenheit, so if your room temperature is above that, it will begin to melt and separate from the other ingredients.

SUBSTITUTIONS

There are a few different oils you may consider substituting for the olive oil. Here are a few great options:

Jojoba oil – Unique because it’s known for hydrating dry skin but also balancing oily skin.

Sweet almond oil – Rich in essential fatty acids, that provide intense moisturization. A gentle choice because it can calm sensitive skin by reducing redness and irritation.

I hope I have inspired you to make your own body butter. This simple recipe has kept my hands looking and feeling so much more hydrated this winter and I now look forward to using it on my legs this summer to keep them soft and silky smooth.

P.S. Consider mixing in some zinc oxide and applying as a natural sunscreen!

Blessings,
