THE SECRET TO PERFECT HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH

Making pizza dough at home might seem daunting, but with the right ingredients and steps, it’s simpler than you think. You can make this pizza dough in less than 30 minutes with the bake time!

The key is to start with quality flour, active yeast, and a pinch of patience. This easy pizza dough recipe combines all the essentials for a chewy yet crispy base. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Mix your ingredients: In a large bowl, make sure to combine dry ingredients first, then add in warm water and oil.
  2. Knead it: Work the dough until it’s smooth and elastic—this step ensures your pizza crust will have the perfect texture.
  3. Grease your pan: Grease your pizza pan so your crust does not stick to it. An alternative would be to line the pizza pan with a piece of parchment paper.
  4. Prebake crust: Before adding your toppings, prebake your crust to allow the crust to crisp up without overbrowning your toppings.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  • 16″ pizza pan or pizza stone
  • large mixing bowl
  • measuring cups & spoons
  • wooden spoon
  • rolling pin
  • oven

BASIC INGREDIENTS

  • 2 1/4 cups of all purpose flour + additional flour if needed
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons dry active yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasonings (optional but adds great flavor!)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • cooking spray

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH

Combine Ingredients. First, measure all the dry ingredients into your mixing bowl and stir them together. Add in warm water and olive oil. Start working dough with wooden spoon until dough starts forming together into a ball.

Knead dough. Once dough starts coming together, I use my hands to gently knead it within the bowl for just a couple minutes, slowly adding more flour as needed. Knead until dough ball is smooth and elastic.

Note – You could mix up dough in the same ingredient order listed, but in the bowl of your stand mixer instead. Then use the dough hook attachment to knead.

Roll out dough. Grease your pizza pan (or baking stone). Put your ball of dough in the center of the pan. Starting with your hands, gently working dough to spread out towards edges, eventually using your rolling pin to evenly distribute dough across pan.

Prebake. Prebake crust (no toppings) in a 375 degrees F oven. 10 minutes for thinner crust / 13 minutes for thicker crust.

Add toppings and bake. After crust is prebaked, remove from oven and carefully add your favorite toppings as pan and crust will be hot. Continue to bake about 12 – 15 minutes longer until cheese is melted, and crust is golden brown.

Let cool slightly before enjoying!

Any leftovers should be cooled to room temperature and then stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

DO I NEED TO KNEAD THE DOUGH?

Technically no, but for the best results I do recommend it.

Kneading is not my favorite thing. I usually avoid it by using my bread machine wherever possible.

I have made this recipe many times where I never did any kneading, but the texture is much better if you do take the extra couple minutes to work the dough a little bit.

My teenage son loves homemade pizza, and he is SO good at making this dough – I think even better than me. Thankfully, this crust is so easy to make, he generally helps me mix it up while I prep the toppings!

CAN YOU FREEZE HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH?

Yes – We love to make up homemade pizzas ahead of time and keep them in the freezer for busy evenings!

To Freeze:

Prepare pizza dough as instructed above and prebake crust. Allow crust to cool to room temperature and then top pizza with desired toppings. Flash freeze pizza on pizza pan for a couple hours. Package pizza into appropriate size Ziplock style freezer bag with as much air removed as possible before sealing. We generally use a 2-gallon size freezer bag or wrap it up in plastic wrap, followed by freezer paper and tape before freezing.

If sealed properly, frozen homemade pizza can last up to 2 months in freezer.

To bake frozen homemade pizza:

Pull frozen pizza out of freezer. Let it thaw on pizza pan slightly as oven preheats to 375 degrees F. Bake in oven 15 – 18 minutes until crust is golden brown and cheese has melted.

CAN THIS RECIPE BE USED FOR A HOMEMADE DAIRY-FREE PIZZA?

Yes! The crust is already naturally dairy-free. Add desired toppings and then sprinkle on your favorite non-dairy cheese.

Our son enjoys this dairy-free cheese from Aldi. It’s the best tasting option we’ve tried, and let me tell you, we’ve tried a lot of the options out there!

Creating homemade pizza dough is more than just a recipe; it’s an opportunity to bring people together and enjoy a fresh, delicious meal.

With this easy homemade pizza dough recipe and tips, you’ll be whipping up delicious homemade pizzas right from your own kitchen. So, roll up your sleeves because a great pizza starts with the perfect dough.
