Feeling the burn after your latest workout? Or maybe just dealing with the aches and pains of daily life? We are no strangers to that living on a farm. Did you know that with just a few natural ingredients, you can create your own Homemade Muscle Rub to soothe your sore muscles and have you feeling better in no time?

This is such an easy recipe! So, if you are new to making your own salves it is the perfect one to begin with! Let’s roll up our sleeves and jump into the recipe for this homemade muscle rub.

HOMEMADE MUSCLE RUB ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS

ingredients for homemade muscle rub

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: It makes a great carrier oil. Usually, a popular choice because it is very nourishing for the skin and moisturizes it. It is generally one of the more affordable carrier oils, but another excellent choice would be unrefined coconut oil.

Beeswax Pellets or Beads: Acts as a thickener and binder for all the ingredients in this recipe. That’s not all though, it is also moisturizing for your skin.

Cayenne Pepper, powder: Is known to increase blood circulation. Contains capsaicin which brings a great source of heat and pain-relieving properties to this salve.

Ginger, powder: Ground from ginger root, this herb is known for its warming effect as well. Another powerhouse to help reduce pain and inflammation!

Lavender essential oil: Very calming and soothing.

Peppermint essential oil: Contains menthol which has a cooling effect on the skin. Blends well with the heat in the recipe to get the effect of a store-bought product like Icy Hot.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  • stove
  • small saucepan
  • small glass dish
  • measuring cups & spoons
  • wooden skewer to stir, optional
  • 6 oz. metal tin or storage container

Note: Anytime you are melting beeswax in a recipe it can be a little more difficult to clean. That is why I opt to stir with a wooden skewer. If you find yourself with a hardened mess, gently re-heat the dish and quickly rub away the melted wax with a paper towel.

RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE MUSCLE RUB

  • 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil (preferably organic)
  • 2 tbsp. beeswax pellets or beads
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper, powder
  • 1 tsp. ginger, powder
  • 8 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 8 drops lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops vitamin E oil (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Make a double boiler. Fill the bottom of a small saucepan with about 1 1/2 inches of water. Heat water over low heat. Put small glass dish in center of saucepan.

Melt beeswax. Pour olive oil and beeswax into the small glass dish. Continue to heat on low until beeswax has fully melted, stirring frequently. Add in cayenne pepper and ginger powders. Mix well.

Cool slightly. Remove oil mixture from water and heat source. Let cool slightly, then add in lavender oil, peppermint oil, and vitamin e oil (if using). Stir.

Pour salve into storage tin. Immediately after mixing in essential oils, pour salve into storage tin. Set aside to allow the homemade muscle rub salve to cool and set.

Storing: Once salve is room temperature and has set, store in fridge for up to 3 – 6 months.

HOW TO USE HOMEMADE MUSCLE RUB

Apply a small amount externally to the affected area. Avoid contact with sensitive skin and areas of the body, especially the eyes and lips.

After we apply this homemade muscle rub to our achy muscles, we enjoy placing a heated rice pack on top to get maximum benefits.

This homemade remedy is a great way to relieve achy muscles, muscle tension, stiff neck, or minor muscle discomfort. The herbs will provide a subtle warming sensation and promote extra blood flow to the affected area, meanwhile, the cooling effect and soothing aroma from the essential oils will help you relax.

So go ahead and try out this natural way to relax, rejuvenate, and conquer your muscle pain!

Blessings,

Homemade Muscle Rub
