The kitchen, in many households, is the heart of the home. Our kitchen counters serve as the main meal prep area. If you’re using chemicals to clean them, you are not only breathing in those harmful toxins, but you are also ingesting them. Yuck!
Making your own homemade cleaners is the best way to ensure you’re not exposing you and your family members to any sort of harmful chemicals.
Also, by making a natural cleaner with just a few simple ingredients, you’re not just saving money on the product itself. In our home, we consider it as a factor in maintaining our health. Not using chemical-laden products that affect our respiratory system or disrupt our hormones are contributing to keeping our family out of the doctor’s office and spending less on medical bills.

CLEANING SPRAY, NOT DISINFECTING SPRAY
Vinegar and isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) are amazing natural cleaners with disinfecting properties, however I do not enjoy the smell of either of them. There is definitely a time and place to use them, but I opt not to use them in my daily kitchen cleaning routine.
I am a believer that our lives do not need to be over-sanitized. This is the kitchen counter cleaner I use for everyday use, and it is just that – a cleaner.
If I was working with something like raw chicken on my countertop, I would first clean my counter, then disinfect it after. However, that is not an everyday occurrence.
When you need something with some extra antibacterial properties for occasional use, have a separate homemade disinfecting spray handy or pick tea tree oil as your essential oil of choice.
*Note – Tea tree oil is not considered safe around pets.
INGREDIENTS
Tap water – I prefer to use warm water as I’m mixing up this DIY spray. If you have hard water in your home, I suggest using filtered water instead. Hard water can leave soap scum residue on surfaces over time.
Liquid castile soap – Castile soaps are known for being great cleaners, yet gentle on sensitive skin. It is highly concentrated, so a small amount is sufficient.
Favorite essential oils, optional – I love using lemon essential oil or any type of citrus oils in a homemade kitchen cleaner. They are great at eliminating any odors and leave your kitchen smelling fresh and clean.
*Note – citrus essential oils are safe to use on granite and other natural stone surfaces because they do not contain citric acid.
