Get ready to indulge in a creamy and flavorful cup of hot chocolate, without any guilt or hassle. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of making your own mix, share a step-by-step guide, and provide some tips to customize your drink. So, grab your favorite mug and let’s get started!
BENEFITS OF MAKING YOUR OWN HOT CHOCOLATE MIXES
The most important benefit of making your own mixes is you get to choose the ingredients and exactly what goes in them.
Sadly, the most popular brands of store-bought mixes of hot cocoa usually contain ingredients that are genetically modified and include preservatives. This recipe shows how with just 5 minutes of your time, you can eliminate all of that.
Also, if your family is dealing with food allergies, especially a dairy allergy, it can be challenging to find store-bought hot cocoa packets that don’t cost an arm and a leg. This dairy free hot chocolate mix is inexpensive to make and requires only ingredients most people already have in their cupboards.
HOW TO MAKE THIS HOMEMADE HOT CHOCOLATE MIX (Dairy-Free)?
Simple Ingredients:
- 2 c. non-GMO powdered sugar
- 1/2 c. Dutch process cocoa powder (can substitute for unsweetened cocoa powder)
- 1/8 tsp. salt
Directions:
- In a medium bowl, combine all 3 ingredients and whisk together until combined well.

- Then, carefully transfer mix to an airtight container for storage. I like to store mine in a wide mouth quart mason jar with a lid like this.

HOW TO PREPARE A CUP OF COCOA
In a small saucepan, start by heating 3/4 cup of your favorite dairy-free milk with 1/2 cup of hot water over low to medium heat. (We prefer unsweetened almond milk, but oat milk would be another great option.)
Watch carefully to not scald the milk.
While the milk and water mixture heats, take a 1/3 cup of the mix and dump it into your favorite mug, set aside.
Once milk mixture is heated to desired temperature, pour into mug over cocoa mix. Stir and enjoy!

OPTIONAL TOPPINGS
- mini marshmallows
- mini chocolate chips
- dairy-free whipped topping
- for the holiday season – a few drops of peppermint extract with a candy cane
