Do you love crispy, golden waffles but can’t have dairy? Look no further, because in this article, we’ll be sharing the secret to making the best homemade waffles without milk or any other dairy products.
Whether you are allergic to dairy, lactose intolerant, or simply trying to decrease your dairy consumption, these waffles will satisfy your cravings and leave you wanting more. Forget about the boxed mixes because we have a simple and delicious solution for you.
In a recent family discussion about the preference between pancakes and waffles, it was unanimous: our whole family favors waffles. We love this recipe because not only does it use simple ingredients, but our youngest son, who is dairy-free, can easily enjoy these with us.
They are the perfect waffles, crispy on the outside with a fluffy texture in the center.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PANCAKES AND WAFFLES?
The main distinction between pancakes and waffles is in the composition of the batter. Although they share many of the same dry ingredients, waffles generally contain more fat and sugar. This is why many boxed mixes available in stores can be used to make either pancakes or waffles.
The increased fat content in waffles contributes to their crisp exterior and light, airy interior, while the additional sugar is responsible for their golden-brown hue.
Pancake batter’s consistency can be customized to be thicker or thinner by simply adding more or less liquid. When prepared correctly, they will have a light and fluffy texture.
Pancakes are typically cooked on a greased skillet or griddle, whereas waffle batter is poured into a preheated and greased waffle iron.
WHY USE AVOCADO OIL IN THIS RECIPE?
Avocado oil is a great option when cooking because not only does it have a neutral flavor, but it also has a higher smoke point than other commonly used oils.
An article written by Dr. Axe, indicates that studies have found avocado oil benefits include helping with prevention of:
- diabetes
- high cholesterol
- high triglyceride levels
- skin issues, such as psoriasis
He also explains that unlike highly processed and rancid vegetable oils such as soybean, cottonseed, and safflower oils, avocado oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, making it a heart-healthy alternative to these harmful but frequently used oils.

WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED TO MAKE HOMEMADE WAFFLES?
This recipe does not use anything super fancy. I purchased my waffle iron years ago. It’s no longer available, but I’ve linked one below that’s similar to what I use if you’re interested.
- Large mixing bowl
- Small bowl
- Whisk
- Measuring cups & spoons
- Waffle iron
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE THE BEST HOMEMADE WAFFLES WITH NO MILK OR DAIRY
- 2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp. baking powder
- 1 tbsp. white sugar
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 1/3 c. water
- 1/2 c. avocado oil
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- a drizzle of honey (makes them golden brown)
- cooking spray
HOW TO MAKE THESE CRISPY DAIRY-FREE WAFFLES
Start by preheating waffle iron.
In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and whisk them together. Set this mixture aside.

In separate small bowl, crack both eggs and beat them until the egg whites and yolks are fully mixed.
Pour all the wet ingredients, including the beaten eggs, into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Whisk the waffle batter until it is smooth and free of any small lumps.

Once waffle iron is heated up and ready to cook, spray iron with cooking spray.
Pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron, adhering to the manufacturer’s instructions for recommended quantity on your specific model (mine produces four waffles at a time, using 1/3 cup of batter for each).

Cook waffles until they are golden brown. Serve right away.
CAN I OMIT THE HONEY?
Certainly, you can opt not to use honey. It’s not going to change the flavor. However, as illustrated in the image below, omitting honey results in waffles that lack the golden-brown color. The waffle on the left is made without honey, while the one on the right includes it.

TOPPINGS FOR THE BEST HOMEMADE WAFFLES WITH NO MILK OR DAIRY
Of course, the easiest choice in our family is a drizzle of pure maple syrup, but we do also enjoy occasionally topping ours with a coating of creamy peanut butter or a little bit of homemade blueberry syrup with some fresh berries alongside.
HOW TO STORE & USE LEFTOVER HOMEMADE WAFFLES
Leftover waffles are a convenient breakfast choice for a hectic morning.
For best results, place any leftovers on a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely to room temperature before freezing leftovers in a freezer-safe bag.
To reheat, simply take a waffle out of the freezer and warm it in a toaster until it’s heated thoroughly.
