This homemade laundry soap recipe takes about 5 minutes to make. As a mom of 2 boys, living on a farm, I can tell you that it is effective at cleaning your clothes well and removing any odors.
WHY DO I CHOOSE TO MAKE MY OWN LAUNDRY SOAP?
In 2019, my youngest son had some health issues that made us start to scrutinize the food we ate, what we put on our bodies, and any products we used in our home.
As I filled out a health questionnaire on our first visit to our naturopathic doctor, one of the questions asked was, “Have you been exposed to fabric softener?” At that time, I thought, that was an odd question.
I started researching the affects many ingredients in laundry products have on your health, it was an easy choice to start making my own.
Through a lot of trial and error, it took years to perfect a recipe that worked well, but this one has worked well for us for a while now!

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE NEEDED TO MAKE THIS HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP?
- 1 bar Dr. Bronner’s Castile soap
- 2 c. super washing soda
- 2 c. baking soda
- 1 c. epsom salt
- 1/2 c. fine grain pink Himalayan salt

DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP
Chop bar of castile soap into cubes (it usually crumbles as you cut it).

Add cubes of soap into food processor and pulse until it is rice size pieces or smaller.

Dump grated soap from food processor into storage container.
Measure remaining ingredients and add them to grated soap in storage container.
Stir ingredients together (or carefully shake) until well combined.
Use 2 tablespoons per load.
PRO TIPS
I prefer to leave the essential oils out and add them directly to the washer for each load of laundry. To me, it seems like if they sit in the jar, the baking soda just absorbs the scent. Also, it allows you flexibility to change up your scent depending on the load of laundry you are washing. My favorite essential oils to use are lemon and lavender.
If your super washing soda tends to clump in the box, store it in an airtight container instead. I usually dump mine in a gallon size Ziploc bag as soon as I open the box.
IS THIS HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP SAFE IN HE WASHERS?
No. According to Dr. Bronner’s website, the grated bar soap is not recommended for HE.
